Smejkalová Sylva (bio ENG)

In 2003, Smejkalová and fellow composer Michal Trnka founded the "early reflections" civic association in order to promote and present performances of 20th-century and contemporary Czech and international music. Each year, she participates in international musical projects which are successfully presented at domestic and foreign festivals such as Moscow's Festival Alternativa, and Prague's Der Film.

In 2005, she was awarded the third-place prize for her composition "Humanistische Apotheose" for symphonic orchestra, which she created for the 100th anniversary of the Humanist Association in Berlin (Humanistischer Verband Deutschlands). The work was premiered in Berlin. In the past two years, she has collaborated on several projects with visual artists. Some examples are "signs above the tracks" for Anna Matoušková's "Places" project (Prague, Olomouc, New York), "komposition für r.v." for Rudolf Valenta (Berlin), the music for the 2008 graduation ceremony at Prague's Academy of Art, Architecture and Design (Prague Crossroads of the Dagmar and Václav Havel Foundation), and many projects for the Havelka Gallery in Prague.

In musical directing, she regularly collaborates with the Czech National Symphonic Orchestra and the Japanese label JVC Victoria Entertainment. She has long been involved in music for children's theater (the pantomime fairy tale "Brouhádka", and "Once upon a time there was radio", created for Radiocustica in 2006).
